Speaking

As former high school English teacher and faculty member in an MFA in Writing program, I’m used to speaking to groups—often large groups. I adjust my talks to my audience, from elementary school classes to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as to adults of all ages, including teachers and librarians.

Topics can include:

  • How I generate my own stories
  • Getting started on your own writing project
  • Where does inspiration come from?
  • Researching for fiction, memoir, and biographical stories
  • Fiction versus creative nonfiction
  • YA versus middle grade stories
  • Finding your audience
  • Guidelines for writing a picture book
  • How to organize a collection of stories, essays, or poems
  • Revision and rewriting (and rewriting and rewriting)
  • Why does literature matter?
