Speaking
As former high school English teacher and faculty member in an MFA in Writing program, I’m used to speaking to groups—often large groups. I adjust my talks to my audience, from elementary school classes to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as to adults of all ages, including teachers and librarians.
Topics can include:
- How I generate my own stories
- Getting started on your own writing project
- Where does inspiration come from?
- Researching for fiction, memoir, and biographical stories
- Fiction versus creative nonfiction
- YA versus middle grade stories
- Finding your audience
- Guidelines for writing a picture book
- How to organize a collection of stories, essays, or poems
- Revision and rewriting (and rewriting and rewriting)
- Why does literature matter?
